“Moon Dough”

The other day, I bought “Moon Dough”. Today I let the kids play with it. Then, Clare decided to make chocolate chip cookies (very good, by the way!).  I cannot believe that the cookies remain untouched…while the kids continue to say they don’t want cookies, they want to play with MOON DOUGH! They’ve been making little doggies, moon dough bones and steaks for hours! This stuff is an amazing way to entertain them.

*UPDATE* : Oh no!!! Now I know why they were so quiet! (Silence in a house full of young kids is NEVER a good sign.) I walked to the play room and I saw MOON DOUGH EXPLODED EVERYWHERE – Like Mt. Saint Moon Dough erupted and spewed little bits of spongy, mold-able, pink and purple moon stuff EVERYWHERE!!! This stuff sure is fun, but by the time everyone was done cleaning it up, it had completely lost its appeal.

I am totally agree with you, this dough falls apart everywhere. I am not sure if I really want to give it to kids, or just use the moulds from it and use normal play-dough.

@ Rene: Let me know if you find the moulds from Moon Dough work well with Play-doh. I know the Play-doh moulds work with Moon Dough, but the kids think Play-doh works better in its own moulds. The problem we have with Play-doh is the three year-old always forgets to put it away so it dries out. Instead of going out to the store to buy more, I have tried making it at home. I have yet to find a “homemade” Play-doh recipe that doesn’t get “sticky” (and really yucky) over time….so that means the best Play-doh is store bought. Thanks for your comment! :)
@ Ketha: Oh, it’s great stuff and really cool to play with. Even for me! :) The kids were just tired of cleaning it up at the time, but were playing with it again five minutes later. It’s just like after Halloween – they love eating the candy, but they hate cleaning up the wrappers & mess they make.

I use this Playdough recipe and it works very well for me and they are softer and lasts longer than store bought playdough. (I usually only make a quarter of the following recipe at a time.)
Ingredients: 2 cups plain flour, 4 Tbs cream of tartar, 2 Tbs cooking oil, 1 cup salt, food colouring, 2 cups water.

Method: Mix the ingredients in a saucepan, stir over medium heat for 3-5 minutes or until the mixture congeals.
