Summer’s here!
My daughters alerted me to a “first sign of summer” the other day. As I was doing a “15 minute marathon” around the house, (a.k.a. putting things back where they go), I overheard the girls gasping and talking about people “being dangerous”. As I eavesdropped listened without really paying attention to them, I gleaned that there were some girls sunbathing on the roof of a house across the alley from us. I looked out the screen door and saw three teenage girls in bikinis, doing just what I thought. Before I go on, I must say that the roofs on houses like our Chicago Bungalow are STEEP! They are not at all easily scaled. I know, because a few years back, Nick and I climbed up there to put up an antennae and I feared for my ilfe bravely did said job. But instead of focusing on the safety issue here (like a normal worry-wart mom (me) would), I had a fruitful conversation with m children about why the roof girls were doing what they did. This led to a chat on society’s perception on beauty vs. one own’s perception of oneself being beautiful & which was better to believe. I was so happy to see that I didn’t have to try hard to show my kids (my girls in particular) that beauty comes from the inside, not the outside. Hopefully this message will stick with them – for when they are “on their own”, they will be swimming upstream with this belief, instead of sticking with the main school of thought.
